Businesses struggled to satisfy supply chain challenges and reach consumers on their mobile devices during the pandemic’s deadliest days.

The adjustments appeared to be transitory since business would resume normalcy after the health crisis subsided. Many of the changes brought forth by the big digital transition were permanent once economies reopened.

Consumers, for example, have built expectations of omnichannel experiences, particularly when it comes to payments. Businesses must now ensure that they are responding rapidly to changing market conditions and payment preferences. Speedy and efficient payments have also proven to be a crucial competitive advantage in their ties with trading partners.

In an interview with Eileen Dignen, global head of payments for Corporate Client Banking at J.P. Morgan, stated that by partnering with banks, including J.P. Morgan, enterprises can gain access to innovative solutions and guidance that help business models evolve while improving speed, accuracy, and security.

Dignen told Webster that digital is no longer a strategy, but rather a means of conducting business. And many businesses must determine what comes next.

Embedded payments are one of the important developments that may help businesses engage with their clients and consumers in new ways.

Ripple, a provider of corporate blockchain and cryptocurrency solutions, is one of the members in the Bank for International Settlements’ (BIS) task group on cross-border payments.

According to Cointelegraph on Thursday, August 10, in order to achieve BIS’s goal of “enhance cross-border payments and meet the quantitative targets for cross-border payments endorsed by the G20,” Ripple will collaborate with other companies, including Mastercard and SWIFT, as part of the cross-border payments interoperability and extension task force.

According to the report, BIS will strive to improve user access to payment systems, boost payment system hours of operation, and build links across multiple payment systems in order to do this.

According to the BIS, global coordination and collaboration among stakeholders in the public and private sectors is required for the growth of payment systems.

Cross-border transactions are rapidly rising as a result of digital innovations and new global settlement rails, yet there are still several issues with international payments and reconciliation.

In a credit-based economy like the United States, credit ratings determine more than whether clients qualify for a mortgage or auto loan. Access to finance is frequently a determining factor in whether or not individuals can purchase basic requirements.

Credit availability is critical; nevertheless, data suggests that few consumers with bad credit understand how to improve their credit standing. 80%: Consumers who have had financial difficulties as a consequence of lenders refusing loans or having poor credit scores.

Consumers with low credit are almost twice as likely as the ordinary consumer to experience financial and everyday life difficulties.

This is one of the main findings of the “The Credit Accessibility Series: BNPL’s Wide-Ranging Impact on Consumers and Merchants,” a collaboration between and Sezzle. This analysis is based on a survey of 3,177 Americans taken between April 26 and May 2. It examines the rising popularity of buy now, pay later (BNPL) credit alternatives, customers’ motives for using them, and the prospect of improving their credit histories.

Salesforce will raise the average list price internationally by 9% in August after seven years without a hike.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, July 11, Salesforce announced price increases for its Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud, Industry, and Tableau products.

The company stated in the release that since its last list price increase seven years ago, it has delivered 22 new releases, thousands of new features, including recent advancements in generative [artificial intelligence (AI)] technologies, and spent more than $20 billion on research and development.

According to the press release, the new list prices for Professional Edition will be $80 (up $5), Enterprise Edition will be $165 (up $15), and Unlimited Edition will be $330 (up $30) for all new and current customers purchasing new clouds.

Due to the amount of computer power they demand, generative AI capabilities may increase the price of tech companies’ products, according to a Tuesday Bloomberg article.

Many software vendors have suffered significant price hikes this year, with procurement company Vendr saying that its clients have seen an increase of 35% since 2022.

Salesforce announced in June that it has launched AI Cloud, a set of features intended to enable real-time generative AI experiences across apps and processes inside the platform. This was one of Salesforce’s most recent acquisitions.

With the help of this new set of features, sales people may automatically create customised emails that are catered to the needs of their clients, and support staff can create unique chat responses and case summaries.

Salesforce released a healthcare-specific version of its Commerce Cloud in April, featuring a HIPAA-compliant platform that aims to simplify and lower the cost of healthcare commerce.

According to Michael Boeke, vice president of product management for payments at CCC Intelligent Solutions, “payments can look pretty different depending on where a carrier is in terms of their digital journey.”

According to him, carriers that are just starting their digital transformations are still sending enormous amounts of paper checks compared to those that are farther ahead.

“The carriers that are sending out a lot of paper checks are still relying on legacy vendors, banks, and payments providers, and they’re likely incurring some hidden costs caused by their systems not being well connected to the rest of their claims lifecycle,” Boeke said.

Bringing Complex Fund Flows Together

The difficulty for carriers with less sophisticated digital infrastructure is in simplifying the actual movement of payments (and claims) across the back end technologies of various stakeholders in order to establish more linked contact points. The difficulty of doing all leads to friction and pain sites that fall into three categories.

Boeke stated that “we’re living in a world where we’re all used to being able to settle up electronically with apps on our phones when it comes to pretty much everything in our everyday life,” adding that “the policyholder experience suffers first and perhaps foremost.”

Consumers are now expecting the same seamlessness from insurance.

Additionally, the trade partners of the carriers, such as the repair facilities and lenders, want a more seamless transactional process.

These stakeholders have often had to rely on phone conversations and emails to begin and follow payments since there is so much paper involved, according to Boeke.

Last but not least, integrating with payment providers may be a big project that requires a lot of time and money.

“We’ve started moving Waze’s current advertising system to Google Ads technology to provide Waze advertisers with a better, more seamless experience over time,” a company representative for Seeking Alpha said. We have reduced the duties involved in monetizing Waze Ads as part of this shift, and we are providing employees with mobility help and severance options in compliance with local laws.

It was announced in December 2022 that Google was integrating its Waze and Maps mapping teams because it was under financial strain.

According to a Dec. 8 report with The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the company will combine the more than 500 Waze personnel with Geo, the division in charge of Maps, Google Earth, and Street View.

The WSJ at the time stated that there were no layoffs anticipated.

About six months ago, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, announced that it was eliminating 12,000 positions across all of its product categories, departments, and geographic areas.

In a statement to staff members on Jan. 20, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said, “Over the past two years we’ve seen periods of dramatic growth.” “To match and fuel that growth,” the company said, “we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today.”

Google has observed inconsistent advertising outcomes, prompting the revelation that the most recent layoffs will concentrate on responsibilities related to Waze Ads monetization.

The “search and other” income within Google Advertising increased by 2% year over year in April, according to Philipp Schindler, senior vice president and chief business officer at Google. This growth was mostly attributable to a rise in the travel and retail sectors.

According to The Wall Street Journal, these banks have taken in more deposits than they have lost so far this year, whereas regional lenders such as Truist, Citizens Financial, and PacWest have seen their deposit numbers dip.

Meanwhile, banks such as Capital One, Ally Financial, and Goldman Sachs’ Marcus reported quarterly deposit gains.

“The future of everything in banking is digital,” stated Capital One CEO Richard Fairbank during an earnings call in April.

According to the paper, regional banks are dealing with two issues: the previous financial crisis, which terrified clients into moving their money to larger lenders, and rising interest rates, which cause people to move money to items like money market funds for higher yields.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) stated this month that banks’ deposits fell by $472 billion in the first quarter of 2023, the largest drop in over 40 years of record collection.

Furthermore, the St. Louis Fed reported on Friday (June 2) that total bank deposits decreased nearly $13 billion in April, “which would push the decline even further out than the FDIC data.”

The WSJ analysis mentioned the high expense of maintaining a traditional bank. A bank in Tampa can cost up to $500,000 per year to operate, but a midsized branch in New York will cost more than double that amount.

At the same time, technology, according to the research, contributed to the deposit runs on Silicon Valley, Signature, and First Republic banks, since internet banking made it relatively easy for clients to withdraw their money.

The payments company disclosed that it was selling loans generated in France, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy to investment firm KKR.

KKR will also purchase future originations of BNPL loans that match the requirements. PayPal will continue to oversee all customer-facing operations for its BNPL product in Europe.

“Buy now, pay later,” said Gabrielle Rabinovitch, acting chief financial officer of PayPal, “has become a major asset to PayPal’s checkout experience, driving engagement, payment volume growth, and repeat use while delivering high-value customers to our merchants.”

She went on to say that the relationship will allow PayPal to expand its BNPL operations in Europe “alongside market demand while preserving free cash flow for other strategic initiatives.”

Recent financial results from PayPal and other businesses that offer BNPL services demonstrate this need, as was mentioned last month.

PayPal itself indicated that BNPL volumes increased by 70% from the previous year to $6 billion. Block said that its BNPL offering brought in $5.6 billion in first-quarter volumes, an 18% year-over-year growth. The year over year growth rate for Affirm was similarly 18%.

In the meanwhile, PayPal management emphasised that customers who use its BNPL service spend 30% more on branded checkout and that over 90% of them are already PayPal clients.

Netflix’s policy on password sharing has had no influence on their subscriber base.

The streaming service said on May 23 that it will initiate efforts to prevent password sharing.

According to subscription analytics firm Antenna, Netflix has had the four best days for user acquisition in the United States in the 412 years Antenna has been collecting the data.

Antenna reports that “based on the most recent data available, Netflix saw nearly 100,000 daily sign-ups on both May 26 and May 27.”

“During that time period, average daily sign-ups to Netflix reached 73k, a +102% increase over the previous 60-day average.” These outnumber the sign-up surges recorded by Antenna during the early U.S. COVID-19 lockdowns in March and April 2020.”

This is not to imply that individuals were not terminating their subscriptions. These figures increased as well, although not as much as sign-ups, according to Antenna. Netflix’s sign-up-to-cancellation ratio has increased by +25.6% since the crackdown was announced, compared to the prior 60-day period.

Netflix, as I reported last week, has been looking for a way to balance its “long history of customer centricity and its need as a business to get paid.”

Netflix has struggled with password sharing for more than a decade, but it used to just expand its way past it and other issues. The corporation is now reconsidering its position.

During an April earnings call, Co-CEO Greg Peters stated that users who had previously been account “borrowers” and had seen a significant amount of Netflix material were likely to switch to the company’s new paid account-sharing scheme.

According to a statement made by the firm on Thursday (June 1), it has recruited more than 5 million users internationally since November 2022.

“Revolut is growing at nearly one million customers per month,” said CEO and Co-Founder Nik Storonsky in a news release.

“As we continue to grow and scale at pace, this is a fantastic achievement for the company and reaching 30 million customers is another important milestone we are immensely proud of.”

The firm says that, eight years after its founding in London, it presently has more than 6.8 million British consumers. With 1.2 million Brits joining the site since November, the U.K. contributed the most to the network’s five million user surge.

According to the article, Revolut has been in talks with the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority in the United Kingdom for more than two years about obtaining a banking license. That’s much longer than the typical license turnaround time, which is less than a year, according to the Financial Times.

The story also included comments from two people familiar with the license approval process who stated that Revolut’s licensing application has effectively come to a halt.

While neobanks are becoming increasingly popular, recent research indicates that many clients are apprehensive to switch from traditional banks to neobanks.
